Protein metabolism during lactation.
Lactation increases considerably the demand for amino acids over that required for basal needs. The demand imposed varies with the quantity of milk produced and, between species, with the protein content of milk. Using data on milk composition from Blaxter (1989) and assuming milk production of 60, 1000 and 50 000 ml/d for a rat, human subject and dairy cow respectively, the ideal protein requi...
متن کاملLipid metabolism during fasting.
These studies were conducted to understand the relationship between measures of systemic free fatty acid (FFA) reesterification and regional FFA, glycerol, and triglyceride metabolism during fasting. Indirect calorimetry was used to measure fatty acid oxidation in six men after a 60-h fast. Systemic and regional (splanchnic, renal, and leg) FFA ([(3)H]palmitate) and glycerol ([(3)H]glycerol) ki...
متن کاملEnergy metabolism of the Virginia opossum during fasting and exercise.
Rates of oxygen consumption and CO(2) production were measured in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) during fasting and prolonged exercise to quantify changes in total energy expenditure and oxidative fuel selection. We hypothesized that fasting would cause metabolic depression and a progressive shift towards lipid utilization to spare alternative substrates. It was also predicted that pr...
متن کاملBrain metabolism during fasting.
Catheterization of cerebral vessels in three obese patients undergoing 5-6 wk of starvation demonstrated that beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate replaced glucose as the predominant fuel for brain metabolism. A strikingly low respiratory quotient was also observed, suggesting a carboxylation mechanism as a means of disposing of some of the carbon of the consumed substrates.
متن کاملEnergy and nitrogen metabolism of rabbits during pregnancy, lactation, and concurrent pregnancy and lactation.
1. In an experiment twenty-four cross-bred does were used, six in each of four physiological states: non-pregnant (NP), pregnant (P), lactating (L) or concurrently pregnant and lactating (CPL). They were offered a diet of high nutrient density (crude protein (nitrogen x 6.25) 272 g/kg dry matter (DM), metabolizable energy 15.5 MJ/kg DM) at one of two intakes on a scale based on metabolic body-w...
